Minority Report

There’s safety in numbers. Everyone knows that. Especially zebras.

For the most part, I’ve grown up in the majority. Caucasian. Traditional middle-class family. Christian. The only issue to throw me in the minority—at least in the female world—was my affinity for Star Wars. Growing up bundled in the warm blanket of the greater number was a comforting existence.

Safe.

Honestly, I rarely examine the world around me. But as I open my eyes, it’s becoming painfully clear that some of my principle values and beliefs are pushing me into the minority. As my security is being systematically stripped away, I’ve noticed I often react out of fear; fear of being alone, fear of ridicule and persecution, fear of the unknown, fear of losing my voice and freedoms.

Rest assured that as my fears come, I’m taking them to God and dumping them at His feet. Nobody likes a defensive idiot. And I’m discovering that maybe, just maybe, it’s not the end of the world to be in the minority.

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” – Mark Twain

Have you ever been in the minority? How’d you handle it?
